Abstract:On January 21, 2025, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake occurred in Tainan City, Taiwan Province, with a focal depth of 10 km. The maximum intensity of the earthquake reached 9.4, and the areas most severely affected were Chiayi County and Tainan City, where significant seismic damage was reported. The earthquake caused extensive damage to infrastructure, including buildings, roads, and bridges, with notable destruction of older structures and non-structural components. In addition, the earthquake triggered secondary disasters such as fires and power outages, impacting the daily lives of local residents.In comparison to the 2016 Meinong earthquake (6.6 magnitude) in Kaohsiung, which had a higher Peak Ground Acceleration and occurred in an urban area, the Meinong earthquake resulted in more severe casualties and property losses. In particular, the collapse of the Weiguan Golden Dragon Building accounted for nearly all of the fatalities. The United States Geological Survey earthquake damage prediction for the Tainan earthquake showed significant discrepancies in terms of casualties and economic losses, failing to adequately reflect the actual disaster situation. In contrast, the damage assessment model developed by our research group offers more refined and realistic predictions, validating the accuracy and precision of the model's evaluations. It provides strong support for disaster damage assessment.
